Fiddleton Cemetery Visitation — July 21, 2007
The Berry family burial ground in Orange County, NC, final resting place of Robert and Elizabeth Cate Berry.
The Fiddleton Cemetery was the site of a historic family gathering on July 21, 2007, the first visit to our ancestors’ graves for many of the descendants. They came from 14 states and from as far away as California. The photograph at the top of the page was taken that day at the Robert Berry Cemetery.

Headstones and Grave Markers#

An unmarked headstone. Only 6 of the headstones in the cemetery had inscriptions; all the rest are unidentified.

Anne Bell Berry's headstone. She and her brother are buried side by side, children of James P. Berry and Artillia Wedding Berry.

Mary King's headstone (red stone). Wife of Thomas King. When Henry Berry died, he left the homeplace to his friends Thomas and Polly King.

One of the many unidentified stones in the cemetery.

Sarah Lunsford Berry, second great-grandmother. She was buried on the same land where their home stood.

Thomas Person Berry married two more times after Sarah died. He lived 14 more years after she was buried in 1870.

Lucy Brown Berry's headstone. Thomas Person Berry's second wife, buried right beside Sarah L. Berry. She died January 12, 1881, just twenty days after Daniel R. Berry's birth, likely from complications of childbirth. She was only 34 years old.

Lucy Brown Berry's headstone (detail). Thomas Person and Lucy had five children between 1872 and 1880. The oldest was only nine when her mother died.

Daniel R. Berry was Lucy's son. He did not die until May 31, 1957. He is buried with his two wives at Berry's Grove Baptist Church.

Footstones of Lucy Berry, Sarah Berry, and Susan Crabtree.

We counted approximately 23 graves, close to the number of relatives we believe are buried here. Many of the graves have no headstones at all. They probably did originally, but vandals may have removed them. The graves can still be identified because they have sunken over the years.
Cemetery Location#
Robert Berry was probably the first Berry ancestor to be buried in this cemetery in 1814.

The Robert Berry Fiddleton Cemetery. The two headstones in the top left (green square) are James Berry and Anne Belle Berry, two of Thomas Person Berry's grandchildren. The graveyard extends about 15 feet beyond those stones. The cemetery is approximately 2 graves wide (head to foot) and 12 graves long, about 15 feet wide and 40 feet long.
