Mary Berry was probably born around 1758 and was the first child of Robert and Elizabeth Cate Berry. During the early years of Mary's life she was probably very secure with her parents working very hard. Political events were taking place in other parts of the thirteen colonies. The French and Indian war would be over by the time she was three years old. Robert and Elizabeth were building the plantation and life was generally happy and good. There were several other young families in the area and like the Berry family they were all having children and building their own plantations. Social events consisted of barn raisings, hog killings, and quilting parties. Mary was 13 years old when Governor Tryon crushed the political unrest in the area with the Battle of Alamance in 1771. The Regulator movement was eliminated by this action. Mary was 17 years old in 1775 when the American Revolution began with the battle of Lexington and Concord Mass. Mary probably married George Waggoner around 1776, the same year that the Declaration of Independence was signed. The Revolutionary War was being fought in other areas of the south and conditions were becoming very uncertain and difficult. As the war was coming closer to Orange County, Mary's Husband* and Father became involved by joining the North Carolina Continental Army. On March 15, 1781 the Battle of Guilford Courthouse was fought and George was severely wounded in that fight. Two weeks later George Waggoner wrote his will on the 2nd day of April 1781. George Waggoner apparently appointed his wife Mary Waggoner and his Father-in-law, Robert Berry as his Executor's. He mentions his two daughters Elizabeth and Ann in his will. When the Inventory of George Waggoner's Estate was recorded on February 1782 Mary signed her name as Mary Kemp.

Until recently not much more information was known about Mary's life after she left Orange County. We now know that Mary removed to Rutherford County, North Carolina. We now have a document that was written by Mary Berry's sister in law Annie Naomi Camp Hill who was married to John Hill about 1782. Annie Camp was James Camp's sister. Their Parents were Thomas Camp and Winifred Starling. Thomas Camp's parents were John Camp and Mary Tarpley.

The Affidavit stated that all of Mary Berry Camp's children were born in North Carolina. Southern Rutherford County is 180 miles from Hillsborough North Carolina today and very close to the South Carolina line. According to Annie Naomi Hill, James and Mary Berry Camp, moved from Rutherford County NC to South Carolina the next day after  Starling Camp was born on the  22 October 1793. This was about a 70 mile  journey from where they had lived in Rutherford County, North Carolina.This move may have caused Mary Berry Camp to die of complications resulting from the birth of her son Starling Camp. James Camp listed himself, two males under 10, two males under 16 and a female under 16 in the 1800 Laurens County, South Carolina, census. This would mean that Mary Berry Camp died between 1793 and 1800. In her father's will written in 1812 Robert Berry listed his daughter as deceased.

Spartanburg County, South Carolina is where Joseph Camp the Attorney who drew up the Power of attorney for his siblings living in Jackson County Georgia in 1815 documented on this page. After studying the Affidavit I knew where to look for a census for James Kemp/Camp in 1790 and 1800. Much more research needs to be done to try to determine when the Camp Children removed to Jackson County, Georgia.

John Camp, James and Anne Naome Camp's grand father died in 1813 in Jackson County Georgia but was burried in Lebanon Church Cemetary in Greenville, South Carolina Lebanon Methodist 4 miles North of Princeton.

When Mary Berry Camp’s father, Robert Berry wrote his will in 1812. He left his daughter Mary Kemp five pounds in that will and stated that she was desceased. Mary Berry Camp’s children drew up a power of Attorney to try to get their mothers inheritance in 1815. I am sure they were not aware of what a small amount that would be.

The affidavit and the information in the power of attorney proves that Mary Berry Camp is the daughter of Robert Berry from Orange County, North Carolina. It was also stated in Robert Berry's will in 1812.

* The information about George Waggoner's involvement in the Revolutionary war is speculative  but it is based on the facts that Robert Berry is known to have been in the N.C. Continental Army in 1781, the battle of Guildford Courthouse was fought on March 15th 1781, George Waggoner wrote his will two weeks later on April 2nd 1781.  His will was presented in open court in August 1881 and Robert Berry and Mary Waggoner were appointed administrators of his will by the court. The Inventory of George Waggoners Estate was presented in the 1882 February Session of Orange County NC Court. Mary Berry signed this document as Mary Kemp
