WILLIAM H BERRY was born in 1836. He grew up in Orange County and married the girl next door. Sarah Frances King the daughter of Thomas and Mary King. They were married on August 6th 1857. There is much more to the story than this. Sarah Francis King’s mother was the granddaughter of Henry Berry and William H. Berry was the grandson of William Berry. The relationship of the bride and groom would be first cousins once removed. This relationship was not known until Sarah Francis King’s sister Susan Ann King Crabtree died in 1920. On her death certificate Susan’s husband noted that Susan’s mother mother’s name was Mary Berry.
This explained why Henry Berry left the Fiddleton Plantation House “to my friend Thomas and
Mary King” in his 1855 Will. Fanny Ashley was living with Thomas and Mary King in 1850 and Thomas King married Polly Ashley on October 9th 1833. There was always a question why Henry Berry left the home his Father built to someone outside of the Berry family until we found Susan’s Death Certificate.
Sixteen months after William H. Berry and Sarah Frances King married William died from the flu in January 1858.There were at least four Berry relatives to die at that time and there was a world wide flu epidemic that year. Lewis Berry,Hannah Berry, and Theodrick Franklin all died that year. Sarah Francis King Berry later married Hezekiah Terry on July 7th 1860. Susan A. Crabtree is buried in the Robert Berry Fiddleton cemetery. Mary Kind is also buried there.
